Sepsis Highest Medicare Inpatient Discharge

For the first time,  Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services’ (CMS) data places the cost of sepsis at the top of the list of Medicare inpatient costs.  Previously joint replacements held the top position.   Sepsis cost Medicare over $6 billion in 2015 and nationally is the cause of death for approximately 250,000 people each year.

A 2017 JAMA study found that sepsis is the leading cause of readmissions for those conditions that are tracked by the CMS in their 30-day readmission rate statistics.

September is Sepsis Awareness Month.
